Single-Parameter Mesh Primitive Counting Formulas for Subdivision Surfaces

Subdivision surfaces are commonly used to simulate additional detail for mesh objects on the scene. For certain problems, such as Lagrangian shrink-wrapping, determining the number of vertices of the subdivision surface is crucial for estimating vertex density. Furthermore, gauging the number of mesh primitives relative to the subdivision level becomes useful for memory preallocation during the surface creation process. We propose a general method for estimating these values using solutions to simple systems recurrence equations.
